Wedding trends, like any other industry, change each year. They improve and alter whenever something new comes along that bride or planner wants to incorporate into the wedding day. Food is a huge part of the wedding and it’s no surprise that reception food trends are always adapting and changing as well. We’ve seen dessert bars, juice stations and fresh vegetable plants used at weddings where the bride and groom want the newest trends. This year, reception menus are being adapted and changed to reflect fusion and modern ideas.

Instead of the traditional cocktail hour where guests are offered one or two of the standard wedding drinks, bride and grooms are trying new refreshing ideas for wedding drinks. Infusion bars are allowing guests to create their own revitalizing blend of favors that they choose. Homemade sodas from fresh syrups and spritzers can be combined with flavorful agave nectar and liquors to create personalized drinks for each guest. The concoctions only require a few more ingredients than the average bar and can be served all night. These drinks make great conversation starters and are the epitome of a modern twist on the classic wedding drink.

Across all wedding themes and styles, brides are branching away from the typical wedding reception food and indulging in cross cultural cooking. This trend takes cultural favorites and makes them edible as finger foods. Fusing cultural flavors with unique food presentation, these treats are forcing brides out of the box. Traditional reception foods are a thing of the past with creative ways to serve vegetables, meats and pastas. Dress up a martini glass with a seafood risotto or paella and you have a perfect portion for an appetizer. Some couples are incorporating more than one flavor trend into their reception menu by featuring stations. Serve dim sum, paella and curry for different flavors that will really impress your guests. You’re bound to have something for everyone when you serve flavors from all over the world.

After a delicious meal and a time out from eating, dessert makes its appearance. There are plenty of ways to serve delicious wedding cake without having to perform the cake cutting ceremony. Some couples are opting out of the wedding cake entirely and serving cupcakes and cake pops instead. These bite sized portions of cake goodness are more affordable than a large cake and cake double as edible wedding favors. Simply create a stunning dessert table in your wedding colors and offer guests cupcake boxes for their own take home treat. The dessert table is a retro and playful way to serve desserts that everyone can love. Dessert stations feature different finger foods, themed bulk candy and specialty cupcakes that all can double for wedding favors. A paper favor bag sealed with a personalized ribbon is a chic way to serve up a sweet wedding snack for after the reception is over. If you’re not a fan of cake or cupcakes, serve pie and shortbread. Many cultures offer a variety of homemade desserts put together by the women in the family to represent the blending of families. Chic miniature desserts can be made from almost any popular dessert; pies, soufflés, tarts included.

For a mid-summer refresher, feature an ice cream float bar. Retro soda fountains can be set up to serve different flavors and combinations of root beer floats. Orange soda, cream soda and root beer are all classic root beer flavors but there’s no rule about real beer floats and other fun alternatives. Use chocolate ice cream to create a double chocolate float for those craving a sweet dessert treat.

If you’ve read any wedding blogs lately you might have noticed the growing food truck trend. Couples are special ordering a few late night snacks to feed the wedding party and any late night party goers. Grilled cheese, donuts and hamburgers are only some of the food truck kitchen finds. Top off your grilled cheese with a tomato soup shooter, or dip your fresh fried potato slices in ranch cups for a late night food craving after the reception is over. This is a great way to assure you get a little nibble of something to eat on your wedding night before jetting off on your honeymoon. If your groom to be has his heart set on an unhealthy hamburger, indulge him after the early crowd has left. Late night food trucks can be set up outside your reception venue and are an affordable way to sneak in a light snack before the after party begins.

The food and beverages can make or break the wedding reception. Plan your menu with your personality and style in mind. If you’re a zesty-take-the-world-by-storm kind of couple, spicy food is a must. For the loving romantics, sweet desserts with a special cupcake topper are a must have. Whatever you decide to splurge on, step outside the box and incorporate your own twist on a classic. You’ll have a wedding reception menu you’ll always remember and guests will talk about the food for years.
